Iranian, Austrian Presidents Discuss Expansion of Energy Cooperation

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer stressed the need for both Tehran and Vienna to pave the ground for enhancing energy ties, particularly transmission of natural gas to Europe.

“Iran enjoys a unique status in energy provision field and can therefore be a reliable energy source for Europe. We are ready to implement the network to transfer (natural) gas to Europe through Austria,” said President Rouhani in a meeting with Fischer in New York.

The Iranian president said that Tehran welcomes Vienna’s cooperation in further development of its railways network, ports, and industries.

The Austrian president, for his part, underlined the old record of the two countries’ relations, welcoming the improvement of economic, cultural and scientific relations between Austria and Iran.

“The European Union’s goal is provision of energy through diverse sources and cooperation with Iran can be fruitful for Europe,” added President Fischer.

President Rouhani left Iran on Monday to attend the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.

There have been friendly relations between Iran and Austria during past years and, on many occasions, the two countries' officials have stressed expansion of mutual cooperation between the two nations in various fields.
